Dear friends.
This food article should have been up around a week ago, but had been really busy in Indon (Medan, and now Jakarta) running camps. Apologies for the absence.
Anyway, I went to this really nice Dessert place, called Ah Chew Desserts. It is found opposite of Bugis Junction along Liang Seah St (look to the right of the road, there are around three dessert stalls along the street.)
The below is the counter where you place your order. (DUH...look at the top of the pic). The plaques on the wall would tell you which desserts are still available. I recommend that you go early with your friends to avoid disappointment.
Anyway, you just need to place your order, give your table number and wait for it.
Here's the list of desserts available.Price ranging from between $2 - $5. Quite comparable to the price you get in hawker centers, only better with Air-conditioning. For this time round, Daphne (my best friend and food kaki) decided on Ginko, Barley & Beancurd skin (Warm), Mango Sago & Pomelo (Cold) and Daphne's craving of the night - Water Chestnut with Egg (Cold)
On the top left is the Chestnut, right is Mango and on the front is my Ginko. :)
I am not really a chestnut person, but the one we had feels cooling and smooth, with little bits of chestnut for you to play around with in your mouth. The sweetness is just nice. So if you are looking for a cooling dessert after a hot day, that would be a great choice.
Next up is the Mango. Reason why Daphne chose this was because it has the Pomelo pulp. hehehe. Personally, I feel that the mango pieces are too small. But the dessert has the right amount of sweetness/sourness (is there such a word??) and mango taste. And the pomelo pulp adds a additional sweetness to it and the "exploding" effect of the pulp in your mouth adds to the experience. If you are looking for something with more Mango to chew on, then, this may not satisfy you. Instead, I would recommend the Mango Tango from bugis junction. :P Tell you more if chance.

Picture of my good friend, Daphne. She is so photogenic. But I managed to capture a few candid shots of her. haha. Private...Private. :P Anyway, we had alot of good laughs that night.
Finally, my order. Ginko. Good for the brain (I really need the added boost, having run so many camps recently and with so many more to go). Now, my belief is that, if you want to sample the real taste of desserts, choose the hot/warm ones. I think it is because of the heat which "opens" up my taste bud and allowing me to savour the REAL taste of the food. (WAH, Deep) Maybe it is just me. :P
Anyway, objectively speaking, Ah Chew gave a fairly good portion, with around 6-8 ginkos on my small little bowl. The taste was smooth, and soothing to the throat. Not too sweet until I get irritation in my throat (which happens when I drink something too sweet, and it forms more phlegm in my throat). That was the good part. Now, for the not so good part. The eggs were too fine. I would prefer it to be more stringy so I can have something else, other than the gingo, to chew on.

Overall, the desserts served were of good quality. Definitely value for money. So, suggest you go in a group of around 4 so you can order more and sample more. Going in groups of over 4 would make finding seats harder. So please take note.
Anyway, just a little note for people who are reading and wondering why is it that Ken is blooging about food, as compared to his previous posts. Well, partly is because, I have been really busy. To the point that I can't sit myself down to write properly. But mainly, Food has always been a passion (or sin?) of mine and I love to share good things with friends. Therefore, please pardon me. :)
BTW, if you have any wonderful place for food, please let me know. :)
Next article, I would update you all on my trip to Indon.
What's next on the Menu?
1) Best Duck Crystal Bee Hoon in Medan
2) Cheapest seafood buffet in Medan at just $9
Cheers!
Ken
